Designation
The position is for a Doctoral Student (PhD Candidate) within the Division of Applied Chemistry.
Research Area
The research focuses on Material Science, specifically enabling the predictive design of 3D-shaped products from pulp fibres. Key areas include:
- Mechanics and multiscale material characterisation.
- Lignocellulose-based thermoplastics.
- Fibre properties, material structure, and processing conditions.
- Predictive design principles for fibre-based manufacturing.
Location
The position is based at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden.
Scholarship Description
This Doctoral project aims to move fibre-based manufacturing from trial-and-error development to predictive design. As a PhD student, you will be part of the FibRe Centre for Lignocellulose-based Thermoplastics, a Vinnova Competence Centre. The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years of full-time research, which can be extended to five years if departmental duties (such as teaching) are included (up to 20%).
Benefits include:
- A starting salary of 35,725 SEK per month (effective May 1, 2026).
- Full employee benefits under Swedish law, including healthcare and generous parental leave.
- Access to Swedish language courses for non-native speakers.
- Opportunity to collaborate with major industrial partners and researchers from KTH.
Eligibility/Qualification
To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following mandatory requirements:
- A Master’s degree (120 credits) or equivalent in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Fibre and Polymer Technology, Wood Technology, Engineering Physics, Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Technology, or a related field.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Documented experience in experimental research, thesis work, or industrial projects related to materials, mechanics, or manufacturing.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret complex experimental data.
Preferred experience: Knowledge of fibre-based materials, polymers, finite element methods, or programming (Python/MATLAB) will strengthen the application.
How to Apply
Applications must be submitted in English as PDF files through the Chalmers recruitment system. The following documents are required:
- CV: Detailed professional and academic history.
- Personal Letter: A brief introduction and motivation for applying.
- Academic Documents: Bachelor’s and Master’s transcripts and theses.
Last Date for Apply
The deadline for submission is November 20.
