PhD Scholarship in Molecular Virology: The Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) in Antwerp, Belgium, in collaboration with the University of Leuven (KUL), is offering a PhD position in the field of molecular diagnostic virology. This position focuses on developing and evaluating Recombinase Polymerase Amplification (RPA) assays for the diagnosis of viral hemorrhagic fevers. Eligibility/Qualification

  • Master’s degree in (bio)medical or pharmaceutical sciences, biochemistry, biotechnology, or a related life sciences field.
  • Background in molecular biology techniques, preferably in microbiology (virology).
  • Knowledge of molecular diagnostic test development (primer design, NCBI blast).
  • Strong laboratory evaluation skills for diagnostic molecular tests.
  • Interest in clinical performance evaluations, clinical study management, and regulatory and ethical principles.
  • Statistical skills for sample size, sensitivity, specificity calculations, etc.
  • Interest in viral hemorrhagic fevers (Ebola, Lassa).
  • Basic bioinformatics skills (R and Python preferred).
  • Strong analytical, scientific writing, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Fluency in English; knowledge of French is an asset.
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel to Central and Western Africa.

Job Description

  • Develop RPA assays for detecting viral hemorrhagic fevers.
  • Conduct clinical evaluations of the assays.
  • Undertake short-term research visits to Central and Western Africa.
  • Prepare and defend a PhD thesis within four years.
  • Present research findings at scientific conferences.
  • Publish high-quality articles in scientific journals.
  • Assist in acquiring funding for viral diagnostic research.
  • Build networks with internal and external collaborators.
  • Contribute to the management of the research group, including student supervision.
