PhD Scholarship in Organic Synthesis: Applications are invited for a PhD thesis position in Organic Synthesis and Supramolecular Chemistry at the Equipe CORINT, Institut des Sciences Chimiques de Rennes, Université de Rennes. The project focuses on the synthesis and study of new boron-based molecular assemblies, including advanced supramolecular architectures such as rotaxanes and related systems with exceptional optical properties. The position is funded for 6 months and will commence in October 2026.
PhD Scholarship in Organic Synthesis and Supramolecular Chemistry – Boron-Based Molecular Assemblies
Designation
PhD Research Scholar (Doctoral Candidate)

Project Description
The research group has recently developed an innovative method using tetravalent boron to construct supramolecular assemblies such as threaded species and rotaxanes. These newly synthesized systems, particularly those incorporating BODIPY units, demonstrate exceptional fluorescence properties.
Notably, a rotaxane containing threaded BODIPY stoppers exhibited outstanding brightness due to:
- High absorption coefficient
- High fluorescence quantum yield
The primary objective of this PhD project is to:
- Design and synthesize novel supramolecular compounds beyond simple rotaxanes
- Explore their structural, dynamic, and optical properties
- Develop new boron-based molecular architectures with advanced photophysical characteristics
Eligibility / Qualification
Applicants should:
- Hold (or expect to obtain) a Master’s degree in Chemistry (Organic Chemistry preferred)
- Have strong practical skills in organic synthesis
- Demonstrate interest in supramolecular chemistry and boron chemistry
- Be motivated, independent, and open to interdisciplinary research
- Possess good communication skills in English (French is a plus but not mandatory)
Job Description
The selected candidate will:
- Synthesize boron-containing molecular compounds
- Develop new supramolecular assemblies (rotaxanes and beyond)
- Characterize compounds using modern spectroscopic and analytical techniques
- Investigate dynamic and optical properties of the synthesized systems
- Contribute to publications and present research findings
