Research Area

The successful candidate will investigate quantum and hybrid quantum–classical methods for power system analysis and optimization. The research emphasizes practical performance and suitability for real-time applications in systems with high shares of renewable energy. Key tasks include:

  • Formulating power system analysis and optimization problems.
  • Developing and implementing quantum solution methods (e.g., HHL, QAOA, or quantum annealing).
  • Comparing performance against classical approaches via numerical studies and real-time simulations.
  • Disseminating results through peer-reviewed publications and international conferences.

Eligibility and Qualifications

To be considered for this PhD position, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Education: A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
  • Technical Skills: Strong foundation in mathematical modeling, numerical methods, and scientific programming (preferably Python).
  • Specialized Knowledge: Familiarity with power system analysis (power flow/optimal power flow) and quantum computing algorithms.
  • Language: Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Preferred Experience: Experience with real-time simulation platforms (RTDS or OPAL-RT) and previous peer-reviewed publications in related fields.

Scholarship Description

The PhD student will be enrolled at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science. The program includes:

  • Completion of PhD courses corresponding to 30 ECTS.
  • Gaining experience in teaching or knowledge dissemination.
  • An external research stay (preferably 3-6 months) at a foreign research institution.
  • Access to advanced laboratory facilities at one of Europe’s top-ranked energy research universities.
