Full-time PhD Scholarship in Virtual Agents: The ARIA team at KU Leuven is offering a full-time PhD scholarship in the area of Virtual Agents in Cross-Reality (XR) environments. The selected candidate will be part of a pioneering research team studying the behavior of users in interactive Virtual Environments, with the aim of enhancing the user experience. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research in the field of Virtual, Augmented, and Mixed Reality, focusing on the development of Embodied Virtual Agents and their interactions within immersive environments.

Research Area:
The research will focus on leveraging modern AI techniques to enhance the believability and behavior of virtual agents, aiming to improve the overall sense of realism and meaningful interactions within immersive environments.

Location: Department of Computer Science at the Arenberg Campus in Heverlee, Leuven, Belgium

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science or related fields, obtained within the last three years
  • Demonstrable experience or interest in Human-Computer Interaction, VR, or 3D Interaction
  • Proficiency in 3D application development using tools such as Unity or Unreal Engine
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills
  • Proactive, team-oriented, and result-driven approach

Job Description:
The selected candidate will be responsible for conducting research to enhance the behavior and interactions of virtual agents within immersive environments. This will involve investigating the integration of virtual agents in public settings, defining their behaviors, and exploring interactions with the environment and human users. Additionally, the candidate will be expected to seek external funding for continuing the PhD and contribute to the supervision of Master’s students.
