PhD Scholarship: Modulation of Inflammatory Dendritic Cell Subsets at Leiden University, Netherlands

Postdoc in Netherlands

Summary

Leiden University’s Faculty of Science and the Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research (LACDR) are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate for a project focused on understanding and modulating inflammatory Dendritic cell subsets in atherosclerosis. This project aims to identify novel therapeutic targets for cardiovascular disease by investigating the role of myeloid immune cells, particularly dendritic cells, in advanced atherosclerosis.

Scholarship Description

Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease underlying cardiovascular events like myocardial infarction and stroke. Current treatments primarily target lipid levels, neglecting the chronic inflammation that contributes to plaque instability. This PhD project will investigate how inflammatory myeloid cell populations, specifically dendritic cell subsets, contribute to atherosclerosis progression.

The successful candidate will:

  1. Identify myeloid cell subsets, focusing on dendritic cells, in advanced human atherosclerosis and correlate them with patient characteristics.
  2. Investigate functional changes of different dendritic cell subsets in advanced atherosclerosis.
  3. Identify proatherogenic dendritic cell subsets and validate potential therapeutic targets for intervention.

This research will utilize available human atherosclerotic tissue and datasets, _in vitro_ studies, and _in vivo_ validation.
