PhD Scholarship Opportunity at EPFL: EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne), one of the leading university campuses in Europe, invites applications for a PhD position in Environmental Geomicrobiology. The Environmental Microbiology Laboratory (EML) aims to understand fundamental microbial and abiotic processes to provide science-based solutions to environmental challenges.

Designation:
PhD Student in Environmental Geomicrobiology

Research Area:
Environmental geomicrobiology with a focus on microbial processes in the subsurface, contaminant transformations, and the nitrogen cycle.

Location:
Lausanne, Switzerland

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Educational background in microbiology, preferably with molecular biology experience.
  • Proven laboratory experience in molecular biology.
  • Desirable experience with anaerobic bacteria.
  • Proficiency in computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and at least one programming language.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Self-motivation, scientific curiosity, critical thinking, rigor in experimental work, and good communication skills.
  • Ability to work as part of an international team.
  • Enthusiasm and good organizational skills.

Job Description:

  • Investigating anaerobic microbial methylation in environmental isolates and generating mutants.
  • Creating E. coli constructs for microbe-microbe interaction experiments.
  • Conducting laboratory experiments.
  • Participating in general laboratory tasks.
  • Performing first-class scientific research.
  • Writing scientific publications.
  • Attending and presenting at international conferences.
