Research Area

The research focuses on the development of new control strategies and coordination mechanisms for asynchronous modular grids to ensure reliable and secure operations, contributing to the energy transition.

Location

Aalborg University, Aalborg, Denmark

Eligibility/Qualification

  • A Master’s degree or equivalent in Energy Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Control Theory, Cyber-physical Systems, or related disciplines.
  • Candidates in the final phase of their master’s degree are encouraged to apply but must complete their degree before starting the fellowship.
  • Competencies in distributed control, cyber-physical systems, and smart transformers are beneficial.
  • Proficiency in engineering tools such as MATLAB, PLECS, and PSCAD is advantageous.
  • Excellent English language skills (oral and written) are required.

Description

This PhD project will take place within an interdisciplinary team, collaborating closely with RWTH Aachen. The aim is to develop concepts and technologies to enhance future power system reliability, as conventional power plants are increasingly replaced by renewable energy sources interfaced via power electronics. The PhD candidate will work on conceptualizing and modeling asynchronous grid architectures, focusing on new control strategies for system stability amid increasing volatility of generation and consumption.

How to Apply

Applicants must submit the following documents as a single PDF:

  • Application letter stating reasons for applying and qualifications.
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  • Master’s and Bachelor’s degree diplomas.
  • Project description (3-5 pages) outlining initial thoughts, a short state-of-the-art review, references, and a time schedule.
