PhD Student and Postdoc (m/f/d): The Department of Infectious Diseases, Virology at the University Hospital Heidelberg is seeking PhD students and postdocs to join the research team. The positions are available at all career levels and focus on investigating post-entry events in retrovirus replication within the DFG funded collaborative research center 1129, specifically in the groups of Hans-Georg Kräusslich and Barbara Müller.
Designation: PhD Student and Postdoc
Research Area: Investigation of post-entry events in retrovirus replication (HIV-1 or MLV) using advanced fluorescence labelling methods, generation and characterization of virus derivatives, and studying virus replication in (modified) cell lines and primary cells using virological and cell-biological approaches. The research also involves state-of-the-art microscopy techniques and image analysis.
Location: Heidelberg, Germany
Eligibility/Qualification:
- Master’s degree in a relevant discipline (molecular and cell biology, biochemistry, biophysics, or molecular medicine)
- Interest in addressing basic virological questions using a variety of methods, with a strong focus on imaging techniques and image analysis
- Good background in standard molecular biological methods
- Ideally, experience in fluorescence microscopy and image analysis, along with a background in cell biology, biochemistry, or biophysics
Job Description:
- Conduct research on post-entry events in retrovirus replication
- Use advanced fluorescence labelling methods and generate virus derivatives
- Study virus replication in (modified) cell lines and primary cells using virological and cell-biological approaches
- Utilize state-of-the-art microscopy techniques (live-cell, super-resolution, EM) and image analysis
- Collaborate with the groups of Hans-Georg Kräusslich and Barbara Müller within the DFG funded collaborative research center 1129
- Participate in regular team meetings and interdisciplinary cooperation with other members of SFB1129
- Possibility of (partial) project management/project responsibility if suitable

What We Offer:
- Goal-oriented, individual training, and development opportunities (e.g., HBIGS graduate program for PhD students)
- Access to the IDIP imaging platform equipped with state-of-the-art microscopes, including superresolution microscopy, and other microscopy areas on campus (electron tomography, MINFLUX)
- Fully equipped BLS3 area with state-of-the-art microscopy
- Possibility of doctorate
- Support for scientific publications
- Regular team meetings
- Interdisciplinary cooperation with all members of SFB1129 and collaboration partners
