PhD Student in Genomics: Join our dynamic research team at the University Medical Center Groningen, The Netherlands, and contribute to cutting-edge solutions for the diagnosis and management of bloodstream infections (BSI). We are part of the DRAIGON consortium, a Horizon Europe-funded project focusing on developing an innovative in vitro diagnostic device (IVD) using whole-genome sequencing and artificial intelligence for rapid and accurate diagnosis of multi-drug resistant microorganisms.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences, Molecular Biology, or a related field
  • Experience or a strong interest in molecular microbiology and laboratory techniques, including next-generation sequencing
  • Collaborative spirit to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team and with clinical partners
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Additional experience in bioinformatics, bacterial and yeast identification, and AMR detection is highly desirable

Job Description: As a PhD student, you will play a pivotal role in the DRAIGON consortium, focusing on:

  • Designing patient inclusion criteria and determining outcome parameters
  • Conducting comparative analysis of AMR prediction using sequencing technologies
  • Developing an end-to-end workflow for profiling pathogens and detecting AMR
  • Collecting and integrating clinical data alongside standard-of-care diagnostics
  • Performing in-depth data analysis to compare sequence-based diagnostics with conventional methods
  • Identifying and evaluating critical steps affecting time-to-result and workflow efficiency
