PhD Student in Plant Biochemistry: The Leibniz Institute of Plant Biochemistry in Halle (Saale), a prestigious research institute of the Leibniz Association, is offering a three-year project-based position for a highly motivated PhD student in Plant Biochemistry. Join our research group “Phenylpropanoids” within the Department of Cell and Metabolic Biology, supported by grants from the German Science Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG). This is a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in the biosynthesis and cellular biology of black pepper, focusing on the compound responsible for its pungency, piperine.

Eligibility/Qualification: We are seeking a motivated candidate with the following qualifications:

  • A master’s degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Expertise in chemistry of natural compounds, biochemistry, cell biology, and/or molecular plant sciences.
  • Proficiency in one or more of the following technologies: chemical analysis and synthesis, LC and/or LC-MS based identification of natural products, plant molecular biology, (Golden Gate) cloning, protein expression, enzyme assays, fluorescence microscopy.
  • Enthusiasm for plant molecular and natural product sciences.

Job Description: As a PhD student, you will be part of a dynamic research team investigating the biosynthesis and cellular biology of piperine, the pungent compound in black pepper. Your work will involve chemical, biochemical, and molecular tools to uncover the previously unknown steps in piperamide biosynthesis. Additionally, you will examine the transcriptome, proteome, and metabolome of black pepper roots and fruits at the cellular level using laser capture microdissection.
