PhD student: Research Assistant : The Department of Ecology at the School of Biology/Chemistry invites applications for the position of Research Assistant (m/f/d) to work on an exciting DFG-funded project. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research in the field of ecological and evolutionary biology.

Designation: Research Assistant

Research Area: Eco-evolutionary causes and genomic consequences of synergistic coevolution

Location: School of Biology/Chemistry, Osnabrück University, Osnabrück, Germany

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Completed degree (M.Sc. or comparable) in biology or a related field.
  • Solid practical experience in microbiological techniques and molecular biological methods.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Sound knowledge of ecological and evolutionary concepts and theory.
  • Creative approach to work.
  • Strong motivation and curiosity.
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Structured and independent work style.
  • Experience in high-resolution fluorescence microscopy.
  • Knowledge of quantitative methods and statistical analysis.
  • Working knowledge of programming languages (e.g., Python) is a plus.
  • Ability to develop and analyze theoretical models (population dynamics, individual-based models) is a plus.

Job Description: As a Research Assistant, you will play a crucial role in the DFG-funded project focused on understanding the eco-evolutionary causes and genomic consequences of synergistic coevolution. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting coculture and coevolution experiments with different bacterial strains.
  • Reconstructing mutations in different genetic backgrounds.
  • Performing growth experiments to analyze fitness consequences of mutations.
  • Quantifying amino acid production rates using LC-MS/MS.
  • Spatio-temporal analysis of bacterial aggregates using microfluidics and fluorescence microscopy.
  • Flow cytometric analyses.
  • Collaborating closely with Dr. Alexander Herbig (Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology) and Dr. Alexander Grünberger (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology).
