Study Area:

This PhD position focuses on investigating RNA biology and phase separation in the context of oxygen sensing. The research will delve into the dynamic regulation of phase-separated molecular condensates in response to oxygen availability, exploring their contribution to physiological responses to hypoxia in health and disease.

Scholarship Description:

PhD Student (m/f/d) – RNA Biology and Phase Separation in Oxygen Sensing

The Sugimoto Lab is dedicated to understanding how oxygen availability dynamically regulates the formation of phase-separated molecular condensates within cells. This fully funded PhD position aims to investigate the role of a specific gene that modifies RNA binding proteins in an oxygen-dependent manner, affecting the formation and properties of molecular condensates. The project is expected to uncover novel oxygen sensing mechanisms in the human body and identify potential therapeutic targets for various diseases.

Eligibility:

We are seeking a candidate with a passion for fundamental questions in biology. The ideal candidate will hold (or will shortly complete) a diploma/master’s degree in molecular or cell biology, with experience in basic molecular and cell biology techniques. Previous experience in RNA biology is advantageous. The ability to work independently and in a team is essential.

Required Documents:

  • Application letter expressing motivation and research interests (max. one page)
  • Curriculum vitae detailing education, experience, language skills, and relevant skills for the position (max. 2 pages)
  • Original diplomas for Bachelor of Science or Master of Science and transcript of records in the original language, including an authorized English translation if issued in another language.
  • List of publications
  • Abstract or short summary of the master’s thesis
  • Contact details of two references
