  • Molecular Biology
  • Cell Biology
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Nanotechnology Data Analysis

Location

St John’s Institute of Dermatology, King’s College London (KCL), UK

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Academic Requirement: Minimum Upper Second (above 60%) BSc degree in a Life Sciences subject (e.g., Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biomedical Engineering).
  • English Language Requirements: Band D
  • Applicant Residency: Open to applicants eligible for ‘Home’ fee status.

Description

This fully funded 3-year PhD studentship focuses on the development of gene editing strategies to integrate healthy copies of the KRT1/10 gene in keratinocytes/fibroblasts from patients with EI. The selected student will:

  1. Optimize the efficiency of KRT1/10 gene replacement using “eePASSIGE” technology.
  2. Assess gene editing safety through sequencing and deep sequencing analysis.
  3. Explore the translational potential of gene editing through functional validation of edited cells.

The project will be conducted under the guidance of Dr. Joanna Jackow and will involve both laboratory work and data analysis to confirm the efficacy and safety of gene edits.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should submit an application for the Basic and Medical Bioscience Research MPhil/PhD (Full-time) via the KCL online application form. Important steps include:

  • Uploading a 500-word personal statement outlining motivations for pursuing postgraduate research.
  • Providing two supporting references (at least one academic).
  • Selecting the funding award option ‘I am applying for a funding award or scholarship administered by King’s College London’ and including the code 20252BMB05 to ensure consideration for funding.

It is highly recommended to informally approach the project supervisors before applying.
