PhD Studentship in AI and Energy Modelling: The University of Limerick invites applications for a fully funded PhD Studentship within the School of Engineering and the Bernal Institute. This full-time doctoral position focuses on applying Artificial Intelligence, interoperability, and semantic web technologies to support advanced energy modelling of future building stock. The project contributes to national-scale digital twin development aimed at decarbonisation, climate resilience, and data-driven energy policy decision-making. The PhD will commence from May 2026 under the supervision of Professor James Oโ€™Donnell.

Eligibility / Qualification

  • A strong academic background in Engineering, Computer Science, Energy Systems, Data Science, or a related discipline
  • Minimum qualification equivalent to a First Class or Upper Second Class Honours degree (or Masterโ€™s degree preferred)
  • Knowledge or interest in AI, data-driven modelling, energy systems, or digital twins
  • Strong analytical, programming, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

Job Description

The successful candidate will work on the project โ€œAI and Interoperable Methods to Support Energy Modeling of the Future Building Stock.โ€ The research will contribute to the development of a national-scale digital twin of the built environment in Ireland.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing AI-enabled and interoperable energy modelling frameworks
  • Integrating white-box, grey-box, and black-box energy models across multiple scales
  • Supporting data-driven decision-making for energy efficiency and climate resilience
  • Analysing future energy renovation strategies and policy scenarios
  • Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams across academia, industry, and policy stakeholders
