The University of Warwick is inviting applications for a PhD studentship that focuses on biorelevant metal complexes as potential hypoxic activated prodrugs for cancer treatment. This project aims to develop new metallodrugs with improved selectivity and reduced toxicity compared to traditional platinum-based therapies.

Research Area
This studentship focuses on the design and development of biorelevant metallodrugs aimed at targeting hypoxic cancer environments. The research will involve the creation of new vanadium complexes and will explore their properties and modes of action.
Location
Coventry, University of Warwick, UK
Eligibility/Qualification
- Applicants must hold a good degree (at least 2.1 or equivalent) in chemistry or a related discipline.
- No prior biological experience is required, but a strong interest in drug discovery and chemical biology is essential.
- Applicants from overseas are welcome but must secure funding to cover the difference between home and overseas study fees.
Description
The project aims to address the limitations of existing platinum-based cancer treatments by designing new transition metal complexes that are cheaper, less toxic, and more selective against cancer cells. Research will involve in-depth cellular studies to evaluate the toxicity, redox potentials, and hypoxic activation potential of these new compounds. The successful candidate will gain extensive training in synthesis and analysis, alongside opportunities for collaborative work with the School of Life Sciences and Warwick Medical School.
How to Apply
Interested candidates should first contact Dr. Rianne M. Lord via email (Rianne.lord@warwick.ac.uk) with their CV and a covering letter outlining their research interests and motivation for applying. More details regarding the formal application procedure can be found at University of Warwick PG Apply.
Last Date for Apply
The project will remain open until a suitable candidate is identified; however, early application is strongly encouraged.
