Eligibility/Qualification

Prospective candidates should have a 1st or 2:1 M-level qualification in Chemistry or a related subject. The following skills are preferred:

  • Aptitude for problem-solving and creative thinking
  • Time management skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Experience in synthetic inorganic chemistry is desirable but not essential

Description

The PhD project will involve:

  • Creating new low oxidation state main-group complexes
  • Exploring their reactivity, particularly in relation to activating environmentally relevant small molecules (e.g., C–H activation in hydrocarbons, CO2, CO)
  • Utilizing synthetic analytical techniques (NMR, XRD, mass spectrometry)
  • Applying methods for synthesizing and handling air and moisture-sensitive chemicals

Students will receive formal training in:

  • Synthesis methods
  • Reaction pathway/mechanism elucidation
  • Potential computational support (DFT)
