PhD Studentship in Ecosystem Services: The University of Derby is excited to offer a fully funded PhD studentship opportunity in the College of Science and Engineering (SE) to assess the impact of various peatland restoration techniques on ecosystem services. The successful applicant will be an integral part of a project focused on understanding the effectiveness of peatland restoration interventions and their influence on ecosystem services including water quality, carbon sequestration, biodiversity, and flood limitation.

Funding:

  • Stipend: £19,237 per annum
  • Tuition Fees: UK home tuition fees (£4,786) covered

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an environmentally relevant discipline
  • Strong background in ecological research and environmental science
  • Experience or interest in peatland ecosystems and restoration methods
  • Excellent data collection and analysis skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and take initiative in research activities

Job Description:
The successful candidate will be responsible for collecting and analyzing data at the Combs Moss peatland site near Buxton. Primary responsibilities include monthly measurements of carbon dioxide and methane flux, data analysis, and publication of research findings. In addition, there will be opportunities to expand the project based on the candidate’s own research interests, such as utilizing satellite or UAV data, bioacoustics, or soil microbial analysis.
