PhD Studentship in Genome Stability, School of Life Sciences, United Kingdom

Postdoctoral Position in UK United Kingdom

PhD Studentship in Genome Stability: A prestigious PhD studentship is available in January 2025 at the Genome Damage and Stability Centre in the School of Life Sciences, supervised by Prof Evi Soutoglou.

PhD Studentship in Genome Stability – The Maintenance of Centromeric Stability (2025)

Designation: PhD Student

Research Area: Genome Stability – Centromeres and DNA Repair Processes

Location: Genome Damage and Stability Centre, School of Life Sciences, United Kingdom

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Minimum BSc 2:1 in Biology or related subject area
  • An MSc degree is advantageous
  • Professional qualifications or equivalent experience may be considered
  • Non-English speaking candidates must fulfill the English language requirements
  • Candidates from underrepresented backgrounds, including Black and other ethnic minorities, are particularly encouraged to apply

Job Description:
The successful candidate will embark on a 3.5-year Ph.D. project investigating the mechanisms by which centromeres manage the delicate balance between beneficial and harmful DNA repair processes to maintain genomic stability. This includes exploring the active contribution of homologous recombination (HR) to centromere integrity, dissecting the mechanisms maintaining centromeric stability, and investigating how centromeric RNA, histone modifications, and DNA methylation regulate the suppression of illegitimate recombination. State-of-the-art proteomics and microscopy techniques will be utilized to uncover key molecular pathways and mechanisms that maintain centromere function and stability.

How to Apply:
Interested candidates should submit a formal application via the online admissions portal, attaching a CV, degree transcripts and certificates, and providing two academic referees. Instead of a research proposal, applicants should upload a personal statement describing their subject areas of interest, skills and previous experience, motivation for Doctoral Research, future goals, and why they are applying to this project. On the application system, select Programme of Study – PhD Genome Stability and indicate ‘funding obtained’, stating the supervisor’s name where required.

Last Date for Apply: 10 November 2024, 23:45 (GMT)
