Job Description
Lithium-ion batteries with nickel-rich positive electrodes are critical for electric vehicles, but they face stability challenges at high states of charge. This PhD project will investigate the fundamental chemistry occurring at the interfaces between high-energy positive electrode materials and battery electrolytes.
The successful candidate will:
- Explore how electrode composition and electrolyte chemistry influence interfacial reactions.
- Combine electrochemistry and physical-organic chemistry with advanced spectroscopic characterization.
- Identify degradation processes and develop strategies to suppress them.
- Work within a collaborative environment with access to state-of-the-art battery and analytical facilities.
Eligibility/Qualification
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- A first-class degree at Master’s level in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, physics, or a related discipline.
- Candidates with a strong 2:1 degree may also be considered.
- Previous experience in batteries or electrochemistry is advantageous but not essential.
- Enthusiasm for research and the ability to work in a collaborative team.
Funding and Benefits
This PhD is eligible for EPSRC Doctoral Landscape Award funding, subject to a competitive review at the Faculty of Science level. The award includes:
- Coverage of Home tuition fees.
- An annual stipend (£21,805 for the 2026/27 academic year).
- International candidates may receive a University of Nottingham Fee Difference scholarship to cover the gap between Home and International rates.
How to Apply
Interested candidates should submit their applications through the University of Nottingham admissions portal. Before applying, it is recommended to discuss the project informally with the supervisor.
