Research Area

Insulation Reliability for Next-Generation Electric Motors in Automotive and Aerospace Applications. This includes:

  • Investigating and enhancing winding insulation systems (e.g., hairpin, Litz-wire technologies).
  • Studying partial discharge (PD) inception, degradation, and endurance.
  • Developing insulation lifetime prediction models under realistic operating conditions.
  • Focus on electrical, thermal, pressure, and mechanical stresses.

Eligibility/Qualification

Essential Requirements:

  • A master’s degree (e.g., MSc, MEng, MPhys, MRes or equivalent) in a relevant engineering or physical sciences discipline, such as electrical/electronic engineering, general engineering, mechatronics, physics, materials science/engineering, mechanical/aerospace engineering, or a closely related subject.
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills.
  • Passion for research and willingness to learn.
  • Good presentation, communication, and scientific writing skills.

Advantageous Skills:

  • Strong background or relevant experience in high-voltage engineering, electrical machines, power electronics, dielectric/insulation materials, or related areas.
  • Knowledge of numerical/FEM simulation tools such as COMSOL Multiphysics and MATLAB.
  • Programming/coding and experimental hardware skills.

  • Due to funding restrictions, this position is only available to UK candidates.

Scholarship Description

This PhD studentship, based at the globally renowned Power Electronics, Machines and Control (PEMC) Research Group, addresses the critical need for reliable electric motors in electrified automotive and aerospace transport. The project will involve extensive experimental testing and insulation lifetime modelling to understand and predict insulation degradation under severe electrical, thermal, pressure, and mechanical stresses. The successful candidate will contribute to improved insulation design and qualification, supporting the development of safer and higher-performance electric motors.
