PhD Urban greening: The University of Groningen presents an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual to embark on a PhD journey in the interdisciplinary research project “Urban Greening for Both Societal and Natural Stakeholders.” This project aims to explore plant adaptation to urban heat islands and develop novel frameworks for the establishment of future-proof, green cities with a socially inclusive approach.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Master’s degree in spatial planning, evolutionary biology, ecology, geography, environmental sciences, or related disciplines
  • Proficiency in English (C1 level or higher), Dutch proficiency favored but not mandatory
  • Strong interest or experience in urban greening and/or plant adaptation
  • Affinity with interdisciplinary research settings

Job Description:
As the selected PhD candidate, you will have the opportunity to engage in multidisciplinary research activities, exploring topics such as temperature tolerance of common city flowers, social mechanisms for the development of environmental stewardship, and citizen science projects related to local plant adaptation. You will be part of a collaborative team at the Faculties of Spatial Sciences, Science and Engineering, and University College Groningen, shaping the specific focus and methodology of the research together.
