Physicist Postdoctoral Scholar: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL) invites applications for a Physicist Postdoctoral Scholar to join the Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics (ATAP) Division. The role focuses on the Berkeley Accelerator Controls and Instrumentation (BACI) program, specifically working on adaptive feedback control and instrumentations using physics-informed machine learning for compact accelerators. The position involves operating the High Repetition-rate Electron Scattering (HiRES) compact ultra-fast electron diffraction beamline.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Recent Ph.D. in Physics or related fields with up to 3 years of experience.
  • Strong background in accelerator and beam physics.
  • Hands-on experience with RF accelerators, photocathode systems, and particle accelerator components.
  • Experience with beam diagnostics and controls.
  • Track record of publications in the field.
  • Analytical and organizational skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Code development experience in Python, C/C++, or Matlab.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with GPU utilization for machine learning.
  • Practical experience with machine learning methods, including neural network architectures.
  • Familiarity with deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, Keras).
  • Graduate-level knowledge of optimization and numerical methods.
  • Experience in numerical methods and high-performance computing.
  • Previous operations experience with HiRES and/or related methods.

Job Description:

  • Design, operate, and analyze experimental campaigns using the HiRES beamline.
  • Develop particle accelerator diagnostics and controls, incorporating AI/ML methods.
  • Conduct research in photocathode, UED, and related accelerator science.
  • Document and communicate results through publications and presentations.
  • Collaborate with BACI program and ATAP Division scientists, engineers, and technicians.
  • Adhere to safety guidelines, foster an inclusive work environment, and contribute to IDEA.

Salary:

  • Monthly salary range: $4,636-$7,371, expected to start at $6,477 or above.
  • Postdoctoral positions follow a step schedule per union contract based on experience.

  • Full-time 2-year appointment with renewal possibility.
