Post-doc: Biology- Ifremer, a pioneer in ocean science, is looking for a biology and trophic ecology researcher to work on the European project BIOcean5D. The researcher will contribute to experiments carried out in pressurized aquariums to study the ability of two species of cold-water corals to adapt to global changes. The main objective is to evaluate the impact of ocean warming and acidification on the biology of species of cold-water reef corals. The position will be based at Ifremer’s Brittany Center, in Plouzané, Brest, France.
Designation: Post-doctoral Researcher
Research Area: Biology and Trophic Ecology
Location: Plouzané, Brest, France
Eligibility/Qualification:
- PhD in Marine Biology
- Post-doctoral experience, preferably abroad
Job Description: The researcher will work within the UMR BEEP and under the authority of the head of the Deep Sea Laboratory (LEP), contributing to the European project BIOcean5D with the aim of experimentally evaluating the impact of ocean warming and acidification on the biology of species of cold-water reef corals. The experiments will be carried out over a period of 3 to 6 months, at atmospheric pressure and at the in-situ pressure of the two species (80-100 bars).
The main mission of the researcher will be the implementation of stable isotope labelling experiments on the carbon and nitrogen sources of the coral holobiont. Through skills in biology and trophic ecology, the researcher will assess how acidification and warming of the oceans will influence the rates of carbon and nitrogen assimilation as well as energy storage in the coral holobiont. The researcher will be co-supervised by Lénaïck Menot (Researcher, BEEP, Ifremer Bretagne, France) and Loic Michel (Assistant Professor, University of Liège, Belgium).
Activities:
- Preparation, implementation, and monitoring of isotopic labelling experiments
- Preparation of samples generated by experiments for analyses of stable isotopes and/or lipids
- Quantification and analysis of carbon and nitrogen incorporation rates
- Qualitative and quantitative evaluation of energy reserves (lipids, fatty acids)
- Evaluation of the heterotrophic and autotrophic metabolic pathways involved in the carbon and nitrogen balances of the coral holobiont.
How to Apply: Interested applicants should submit their CV, a cover letter, and two reference letters via email to Lenaick.Menot@ifremer.fr and Loic.Michel@uliege.be with the reference PV-2023-1266/1 in the subject line.
