Post-Doc Position in Computational Genomics and High-Throughput Genome Editing at VIB-KU Leuven, Belgium

Postdoctoral Fellow in Belgium

The VIB-KU Leuven Center for Microbiology (CfM) is inviting applications for a fully funded Postdoctoral Researcher position in Computational Genomics and High-throughput Genome Editing. Embedded within one of Europe’s premier research institutes in Leuven, Belgium, this role offers an exceptional opportunity to investigate how synonymous mutations shape gene expression and cellular phenotypes using cutting-edge CRISPR-based technologies and multi-omics data integration.

Position Overview

DesignationPostdoctoral Researcher (Post-Doc)
Research AreaComputational Genomics, Systems Biology, Bioinformatics, High-throughput Genome Editing
Host InstitutionVIB-KU Leuven Center for Microbiology (Laboratory for Genome Editing and System Genetics)
LocationLeuven, Belgium
Contract TypeFull-time, 2-year contract
Start DateFlexible (ideally between February and May 2027)
Application Deadline15 December 2026 (or until filled)

Research Area & Project Scope

The project is hosted by the Laboratory for Genome Editing and System Genetics, which pioneers high-throughput CRISPR platforms such as MAGESTIC (Multiplexed Accurate Genome Editing with Short, Trackable, Integrated Cellular Barcodes). The lab links precise genetic variants to unique DNA barcodes, enabling massively parallel functional assays across entire cell populations.

The postdoctoral fellow will focus on understanding the non-silent impacts of synonymous mutations on cellular function. By utilizing large-scale synonymous saturation mutagenesis libraries alongside high-throughput molecular readouts, the project investigates how synonymous variants alter RNA abundance, protein stability, translation, and organismal fitness.

Job Description

As a Postdoctoral Researcher with a strong computational background, you will turn complex, multidimensional datasets into actionable biological insights. Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing and applying advanced statistical models, bioinformatics pipelines, and machine learning/AI frameworks to high-throughput mutagenesis datasets.
  • Integrating multi-layered molecular measurements (RNA abundance, protein stability, fitness metrics) to identify predictive patterns governing synonymous variant effects.
  • Collaborating closely with wet-lab experimental biologists to guide experimental design and validate computational predictions.
  • Publishing research findings in high-impact international scientific journals and presenting at global conferences.
  • Contributing to grant writing and shaping the computational strategies of the research team.

Eligibility and Qualifications

Applicants must satisfy the following criteria:

  • Education: A PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Systems Biology, Genomics, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related quantitative discipline.
  • Data Analysis: Demonstrated hands-on expertise in analyzing, interpreting, and integrating complex, large-scale biological datasets.
  • Computational Skills: Strong proficiency in advanced statistical methods, programming (e.g., Python, R), and data science; experience with machine learning or artificial intelligence is highly preferred.
  • Domain Knowledge: Prior experience handling high-throughput screening or mutagenesis data is an advantage, though not mandatory.
  • Soft Skills: Highly motivated, inclusive team-player with high scientific curiosity and excellent organizational skills.
  • Language: Excellent proficiency in written and spoken English (the working language of the lab).

What VIB Offers

  • An internationally competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.
  • A 2-year full-time contract within a world-class scientific ecosystem.
  • Access to advanced research infrastructure, high-performance computing, and career development programs.
  • Dedicated institutional support for applying to competitive national and international postdoctoral fellowships.
  • A vibrant, culturally rich work location in Leuven, situated just 25 km from Brussels.

Selection Process

The recruitment process involves two key steps:

  1. Shortlisted applicants will participate in an initial virtual interview.
  2. Finalists will be invited to the institute for a comprehensive one-day on-site interview and lab visit.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should submit their application online through the official VIB job portal. Applications sent via email will not be considered.

Your application dossier must include:

  • A comprehensive Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  • A 1-page motivation letter describing your research background and why you are interested in this specific project.
  • Names and contact information for at least two professional academic referees.
