Post Doctoral Research Fellow: The Skin Sensing Research Group (SSRG) is seeking a highly motivated Post Doctoral Research Fellow to contribute to an Experimental Medicine grant funded by the Medical Research Council. This position offers a unique opportunity to investigate the impact of temperature on the function and comfort of the skin under pressure and shear, and its variation with age and clinical status. The research findings will be utilized to support innovation in healthcare and user-centered technologies, with a focus on maintaining skin health across the lifespan.
Designation: Post Doctoral Research Fellow
Research Area: Biology – Investigating the effects of cooling on the physiological and perceptual tolerance of human skin to mechanical loading, with a specific focus on pressure ulcers, in both healthy participants and patients with spinal cord injury.
Location: Southampton General Hospital
Eligibility/Qualification: Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be granted upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded, the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
Job Description:
As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, the successful candidate will design and conduct a series of lab-based trials to examine the effects of cooling on the physiological and perceptual tolerance of human skin to mechanical loading. This will involve working with both younger and older healthy participants, as well as a sub-cohort of patients with spinal cord injury. The research will encompass an innovative combination of non-invasive techniques including microvascular Laser Doppler Flowmetry, inflammatory biomarker sampling from skin sebum, structural and functional imaging via Optical Coherence Tomography, biophysical modeling of skin friction, and quantitative sensory testing. The objective is to advance the understanding of normal and pathological skin function, with a focus on supporting the innovation of assistive thermal technologies that maintain skin health across the lifespan.
