Post-Doctoral Researcher – Virology: The Institute for Infectious Diseases (IFIK) at the University of Bern is seeking a passionate Early Career Researcher (ECR) for a post-doctoral position in virology. This interdisciplinary role is part of the Experimental Virology research group focusing on virus-host interactions, specifically examining influenza A viruses (IAV) in pigs and humans.

Research Area:
Virology, with a focus on viral zoonoses and host–pathogen interactions in the respiratory epithelium.

Location:
Institute for Infectious Diseases (IFIK), University of Bern, Bern, Switzerland

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • PhD in virology or equivalent field
  • Experience in molecular virology and advanced cell culture
  • Prior experience working at biosafety level 3 is advantageous
  • Fluent in spoken and written English

Job Description:
The role involves monitoring and characterizing influenza A viruses circulating in pig and human populations, combining genomic, epidemiological, and microbiological data to understand IAV evolution, transmission, and their biological and clinical impacts. The researcher will work under the supervision of PD Dr. Ronald Dijkman and collaborate closely with the Virus Genomics/Bioinformatics research group and clinicians from the veterinary and human medicine faculties.
