Eligibility/Qualification

  • PhD in Biology, Oceanography, Ecology, or a related field (or expected completion before start date).
  • Candidates with backgrounds in Physics, Computer Science, or Engineering may also apply, provided they demonstrate relevant skills.

Required Skills:

  • Strong programming and analytical skills (preferably in Matlab; R or Python accepted).
  • Experience with quantitative acoustics or inertial sensor data (especially accelerometer) processing and analysis.
  • Proven experience with scientific writing and publication of research results.
  • Strong written and spoken English proficiency.

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of biologging technologies (e.g., DTAGs, Acousonde tags).
  • Experience with Github, open-source code management, and version control.
  • Effective time management and experience overseeing research grants/contracts.

Description

The postdoctoral researcher will advance research into marine mammal acoustic behavior, developing new methods to identify calls using sound and movement tags (e.g., DTAGs). The role involves data analysis, scientific writing, and collaboration with esteemed experts, including Dr. Frants Jensen at Aarhus University, Dr. Susan Parks at Syracuse University (USA), and Dr. Douglas Gillespie at the University of St. Andrews (UK). Additional opportunities include contributing to project website development, writing user-friendly guides, and field data collection.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and validate methods for identifying social calls in marine mammals.
  • Analyze archival tag data (stereo acoustic and accelerometric recordings).
  • Collaborate with international researchers and contribute to interdisciplinary projects.
  • Write reports and/or scientific papers showcasing the research findings.
  • Support broader accessibility of the tools and methods developed in the project.
