Postdoc in Molecular Conductors, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden

Postdoctoral fellow in Sweden, Chalmers University of Technology

Summary

This postdoctoral position leads the experimental development of metal-like electronic materials and potential superconductors synthesized from abundant elements (carbon and oxygen). Working in Daniel Weber’s group at Chalmers University of Technology—in close collaboration with Martin Rahm’s computational group—the researcher will synthesize stacked oxocarbon ring salts, grow single crystals, and perform advanced structural, electronic, and magnetic characterization.

Designation

Postdoctoral Researcher (Postdoc)

Research Area

Inorganic/Organic Solid-State Chemistry, Air-Sensitive Preparative Chemistry, Single-Crystal Growth, and Advanced Characterization of Molecular Conductors and Oxocarbon Salts.

Location

Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden.

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Required Degree: PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, or Physics (must be awarded before the employment decision is finalized).
  • Experience Preference: Highly meritorious if the PhD was obtained within the last 3 years prior to the application deadline.
  • Language Proficiency: Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
  • Core Competencies: Practical mastery in handling air- and moisture-sensitive chemistry (Schlenk lines, gloveboxes), crystal growth, and single-crystal/powder X-ray diffractometers. Ability to discuss electronic band structure and magnetic spin behavior with theoretical collaborators.

Job Description

  • Crystal Growth & Synthesis: Synthesize inorganic/molecular solids under inert conditions (alkali metals, strong reductants, sealed ampoules) and grow single crystals to investigate itinerant vs. localized electron behavior in oxocarbon stacks.
  • Advanced Materials Characterization: Lead variable-temperature single-crystal/powder diffraction, pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, total scattering, transport measurements, magnetometry, and spectroscopy (Raman, IR, EPR, solid-state NMR).
  • Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Coordinate experimental findings with internal computational teams (Rahm group), device fabrication partners (Dash group), and external collaborators at Uppsala University and the Swedish NMR Centre.
  • Dissemination: Present data at national and international conferences, publish peer-reviewed articles, and maintain rigorous traceability for all synthesis batches and samples.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted in English as PDF files through the Chalmers Applicant Tracking System (ReachMee) via the “Apply” link on the official job posting page.

  • Required Documents:
    1. CV: File named "CV, Surname", including a full publication list.
    2. Personal Letter: File named "Personal letter, Surname" (1–2 pages) outlining your background, results, future goals, and a mandatory dedicated subsection (max 0.5 page) describing past work with air-sensitive molecular salts or challenging inert chemistry (including what went wrong and how you resolved it).
    3. Certificates & References: Degree certificate (or statement of defense date) and contact details for two academic references.
  • Note: Email applications and incomplete submissions will not be processed.
  • Contact for Inquiries: Daniel Weber (daniel.weber@chalmers.se).
