Summary

The next leap in battery development is expected to be lithium solid-state batteries (SSBs), which replace flammable organic electrolytes with safer, more compact solid ones. As part of the Swedish governmental battery initiative COMPEL, KTH Royal Institute of Technology is offering a 2-year postdoc project focused on the atomistic modeling and synthesis of ceramic electrolytes for these next-generation batteries.

Research Area

Atomistic modelling and synthesis of ceramic electrolytes for composite solid-state batteries, with a particular interest in halides and sulfides.

Eligibility/Qualification

Requirements:

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree in Physics, Inorganic Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related subject (must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made).
  • Experience in electrochemistry.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Strong laboratory and computational skills.
  • Awareness of diversity and equal treatment issues.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree obtained within the last three years.
  • Experience in solid-state batteries and electrochemical characterization techniques.
  • First-hand experience with inorganic synthesis (wet chemical synthesis, glovebox/Schlenk line use, solid-state chemistry) and DFT modeling (VASP, Quantum ESPRESSO, etc.).
  • An innovative mindset, the ability to work independently, and strong collaborative skills.

Job Description

The project aims to investigate and develop novel ceramic electrolytes for next-generation composite solid-state batteries. By integrating atomistic simulations with experimental validation, you will identify the structural and chemical features that govern battery performance. Computational methods will be used to explore and design new composite architectures, and promising materials will be synthesized and experimentally characterized. You will evaluate ionic transport properties, interfacial stability, and overall suitability for SSB applications, using the results to inform further simulations.
