Postdoc in Stochastic Modelling for Population Genetics at INRAE, France

Postdoc in France

Summary

INRAE is offering a postdoctoral position for a highly motivated researcher to work on stochastic modelling for population genetics. This role involves studying the dynamics of transposable elements within host cell genomes, using branching processes and other advanced modelling frameworks. The postdoc will contribute to the ANR JCJC research project “PASTAe” and collaborate with international partners.

Designation

Postdoctoral Researcher

Research Area

  • Stochastic Modelling
  • Population Genetics
  • Applied Mathematics
  • Computational Biology
  • Epidemiology (inference tools)

Location

BioSP research unit (“Biostatistics and Spatial Processes”), INRAE Avignon, France

Eligibility/Qualification

Education

  • PhD in applied mathematics is recommended.

Desired Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong background in branching processes, stochastic processes, and/or stochastic models for population genetics.
  • Candidates with a background more oriented towards computational biology will also be considered.
  • An interest in research at the interface between probability, statistics, and population genetics is highly recommended.

Job Description

The successful candidate will be welcomed into the BioSP research unit at INRAE Avignon, as part of the ANR JCJC research project “PASTAe”. The primary focus of this postdoc is the probabilistic study of structured assemblages of biological entities to develop new inference tools for epidemiology. Specifically, the role involves:

  1. Studying the quasi-stationary dynamics of a neutral model for transposition dynamics. This involves coupling a Wright-Fisher model for host cell dynamics with branching processes for intra-host transposition dynamics.
  2. Extending the existing modelling framework to incorporate various effects of transposons on host cell reproduction dynamics. This includes studying the properties of these models analytically and/or through simulations using the SLiM framework.
  3. Comparing research findings with data collected on the powdery mildew Blumeria hordei, in collaboration with Prof. Aurélien Tellier’s group at TU Munich.
