PostDoc Position: Dynamics of Desert-Dust: GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel invites applications for a PostDoc position in the research unit Marine Meteorology. The project focuses on the dynamics of desert-dust transport over the Atlantic, aiming to understand the role of physical processes in North African dust outbreaks. The position involves ship-based measurements during an ocean expedition in early 2025, funded by the German Science Foundation.

PostDoc Position: Dynamics of Desert-Dust Transport over the Atlantic

Designation: Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d)

Research Area: Atmospheric Dynamics of Desert-Dust Outbreaks

Location: GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Germany

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Ph.D. degree in Physics, Meteorology, Climate Science, Informatics, or related field.
  • Strong physical understanding of weather and atmospheric dynamics.
  • Knowledge of remote sensing, weather predictions, and aerosols (desirable).
  • Excellent programming skills (python, shell scripts, FORTRAN, or similar).
  • Experience with climate models (ICON, MPI-ESM1.2, or similar, desirable).
  • Willingness to work on research vessels during expeditions (up to six weeks).
  • Very good oral and written English skills; knowledge of Portuguese is advantageous.
  • Good presentation skills and the ability to work in teams.

Job Description:

  • Conduct fundamental research on the atmospheric dynamics of desert-dust outbreaks.
  • Operate instruments on German research vessels for aerosol and meteorological data collection.
  • Perform quality control and scientific analysis of observational data from expeditions.
  • Conduct and analyze experiments with the ICON model on a high-performance computer.
  • Graphically display results and publish in leading journals.
  • Present findings at conferences and workshops.
