The position is part of the Horizon-Europe project Climtip, which focuses on the uncertainty-aware quantification of Earth system tipping potential and its impacts.

Designation: Postdoctoral Researcher

Research Area: Climate Dynamics

Location: Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research Utrecht (IMAU) Department of Physics, Faculty of Science Utrecht University

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • PhD in physics, applied mathematics, meteorology, geosciences, or a related field
  • Excellent skills in scientific programming and numerical/statistical analysis of simulated and observed data
  • Experience with machine learning applications
  • Experience with climate modeling and climate model output analyses
  • Basic knowledge of (geophysical) fluid dynamics

Job Description: The postdoc will be involved in the Horizon-Europe project Climtip, focusing on the efficient determination of tipping behavior in Earth System Models (ESMs). The key research areas include identifying multi-stable regimes in ESMs and applying rare event techniques to tipping in ESMs. The postdoc will work on the development of techniques to efficiently determine transition pathways using advanced machine learning techniques. Additionally, the application of these techniques will be extended to more detailed climate models.
