Postdoc in Netherlands

Radboud University is inviting applications for a Postdoc Position in NeuroAI: Biologically Grounded Neural Networks for Cognition within the Faculty of Science. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge cognitive architectures and smart brain implants as part of the nationwide EBRAINS-NEUROTECH infrastructure.

Overview

DesignationPostdoctoral Researcher
Research AreaNeuroAI, Computational Neuroscience, Deep Learning, Neuromorphic Computing
LocationDonders Institute, Radboud University, Nijmegen, Netherlands
Employment0.8 – 1.0 FTE (Temporary, 1 year with potential 3-year extension)

Job Summary

Most existing brain implants operate as fixed-function hardware. Within the EBRAINS-NEUROTECH infrastructure, researchers are developing an adaptable tool chain featuring neural networks that perform on-device perceptual and cognitive processing. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will build the foundation of this system: biologically grounded neural network modules capable of running on-device to support vision implants and cognitive restoration.

Job Description

The successful candidate will:

  • Develop NeuroAI-in-practice modules for perception and cognition grounded in neural mechanisms.
  • Design neural networks that are user-friendly for experimental researchers while delivering high-impact, publishable scientific findings.
  • Focus on two guiding use cases: processing for vision implants and implants aimed at cognitive restoration.
  • Collaborate with a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science (CWI) to translate network designs onto neuromorphic hardware architectures.
  • Work across an interdisciplinary consortium linking Radboud University (Prof. Paul Tiesinga), the University of Amsterdam (Dr. Jorge Mejias), and CWI (Prof. Sander Bohte).

Eligibility & Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • A completed PhD degree in a quantitative discipline such as physics, mathematics, computer science, engineering, or computational/theoretical neuroscience.
  • Strong programming proficiency in Python and C.
  • Hands-on experience with modern deep learning libraries such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX.
  • A background in neuroscience (particularly cognitive process mechanisms) or a proven motivation to acquire this domain knowledge.
  • Strong collaborative skills and an interest in working across academic disciplines.

What We Offer

  • A 1-year contract with the possibility of extension for up to an additional 3 years (total duration of 4 years).
  • Gross monthly salary ranging from €3,706 to €5,760 (Scale 10), based on qualifications and experience for a full-time 38-hour work week.
  • An 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
  • Generous annual leave (30 to 41 days per year for full-time appointments).
  • Access to world-class research facilities at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should submit their application online addressed to Prof. Paul Tiesinga. Please prepare and upload the following documents:

  • A comprehensive Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  • A targeted cover letter explaining your motivation and suitability for the role.
  • Names and email addresses of at least two (preferably three) academic referees.
