Postdoc Position in Theoretical and Computational Quantum Materials, Max Planck Institute, Germany

PhD in Germany, International Max Planck Research School

Summary

The Theory of Chiral Quantum Materials Group at the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics is seeking applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Researcher. Funded through the DFG Cluster of Excellence Center for Chiral Electronics (CCE), this role focuses on exploring how chirality, magnetism, and band topology shape electronic states, transport, and emergent functionalities in quantum materials.

Research Area

The project investigates chiral and topological materials, quantum transport, and molecule-material interfaces. Key research topics include:

  • Spin and orbital textures
  • Chirality-dependent quantum transport
  • Interfacial charge transfer
  • Enantioselective molecular adsorption

Eligibility / Qualification

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a closely related field.

While candidates do not need experience in all fields, a strong background in electronic-structure calculations and an interest in learning quantum transport or molecule-surface modeling is highly encouraged. Desirable experience includes:

  • Density functional theory (DFT) and electronic-structure calculations
  • Wannier-based methods and quantum transport theory (e.g., Kubo or non-equilibrium Green’s-function approaches)
  • Topological or chiral quantum materials and symmetry analysis
  • Surface and interface modeling (molecular adsorption and charge transfer)
  • Scientific programming and numerical modeling

Job Description

The successful candidate will utilize advanced theoretical and computational approaches to study quantum materials. Responsibilities and environment include:

  • Combining first-principles electronic-structure calculations, Wannier-based modeling, symmetry analysis, quantum-transport theory, and surface/interface calculations.
  • Collaborating closely with experimental and theoretical research groups within the Center for Chiral Electronics and partner groups across Europe.
  • Participating in an international, interdisciplinary research environment with cutting-edge infrastructure.
  • Engaging in joint workshops and conferences to maintain international visibility.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should prepare an application consisting of a CV (including a list of publications) and the contact details of two referees.

  • Application Portal: Applications must be submitted through the Softgarden Online Application Platform.
  • Scientific Inquiries: For any scientific questions regarding the project, you can reach out directly to Dr. Qun Yang at qun.yang@mpi-halle.mpg.de.

Note: Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, so early submission is highly prioritized. The Max Planck Institute specifically encourages women and severely disabled candidates with equivalent qualifications to apply.
