Postdoc Position on High-Entropy Materials, Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung GmbH, Germany

PhD in Germany, International Max Planck Research School
Postdoc Position on High-Entropy Materials: The Max-Planck-Institut for Sustainable Materials (MPI SusMat) is dedicated to understanding and designing materials down to the atomic scale. We conduct basic research on structural and functional materials, primarily focusing on metallic alloys. Our work encompasses synthesis and processing, characterization, and properties, as well as their response in engineering components exposed to real environmental conditions. Our interdisciplinary approach fosters intense collaboration among experimentalists, theoreticians, and various groups and departments.

Designation

Postdoctoral Researcher

Research Area

Sustainable High-Entropy Materials, Alloy Design, Powder Metallurgy

Location

Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung GmbH, Germany

Eligibility/Qualification

  • PhD in Engineering or Physics with a focus on Physical Metallurgy or Powder Metallurgy.
  • Practical experience in basic experimental skills (SEM, EBSD, FIB).
  • Advantageous: Experience in advanced microstructure characterization (TEM), synchrotron, or computational skills (combined with machine learning).

Job Description

This project aims to design multi-functional high-entropy materials (alloys, ceramics, and composites) sustainably. Starting with material design based on thermodynamic calculations, the project allows high flexibility in tailoring the composition and microstructure using different raw materials. The preparation of materials will primarily focus on powder metallurgy methods (high-energy ball milling and sintering). Microstructure characterization and performance measurement (mechanical and physical) will be carried out mainly at MPIE.

The project is a collaborative effort with various academic and industrial partners from Europe. It will commence on 01.08.2024, with possible arrangements for a later start date. The appointment is for a period of 2 years, with a salary according to the German salary scale for the public sector (TVÖD E13).
