Postdoc Researcher at Vienna BioCenter, Austria

Postdoc Position 2019 in Austria, University of Vienna

Postdoc Researcher at Vienna BioCenter: The Ma lab at the Gregor Mendel Institute of Molecular Plant Biology seeks a Postdoc Researcher to explore the fascinating relationship between gall-inducing insects and plant development and defense signaling.

Designation: Postdoc Researcher

Research Area:

Our research focuses on galling insects that manipulate plant developmental pathways to create diverse and complex galls. We aim to establish a groundbreaking gall model using the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana and the Swede Midge. The project involves a multidisciplinary approach, including genetics, transcriptomics, molecular biology, biochemistry, and advanced imaging techniques, to uncover the genetic and signaling factors governing gall formation. Additionally, we will characterize key hormonal and receptor signaling during gall formation, spanning from single cells to whole organs.

Location: Gregor Mendel Institute, Vienna BioCenter, Austria

Eligibility/Qualification:

We are seeking inquisitive, goal-oriented, and proactive individuals with the following qualifications:

  • Strong background in molecular biology or cell biology.
  • Interest in signaling mechanisms.
  • Proficiency in English (written and oral).
  • Experience in handling ScRNA or other omics data is a plus.
  • Proficiency in programming is a plus.
  • Experience with plant immunity/development or insects is a plus.

Job Description:

As a Postdoc Researcher in the Ma lab, your responsibilities will include:

  • Characterizing major signaling and hormonal determinants for gall development using ScRNAseq, metabolomics, and proteomics.
  • Identifying and characterizing potential gene-for-gene interactions between Arabidopsis and Swede Midge.
  • Dissecting defense and developmental signaling interactions using molecular genetics and advanced imaging techniques.
  • Collaborating with a dynamic team on cutting-edge research.
  • Mentoring and supervising opportunities for future independence.
  • Engaging in conferences, reviewing, manuscript, and grant writing.

We offer training in advanced cell biology and molecular genetics skillsets to investigate fundamental cellular mechanisms.

How to Apply:

Interested candidates should send their CV and a brief motivation letter to Yan Ma at yan.ma@unil.ch. In your letter, please share why you are interested in our lab, the research questions that intrigue you the most, and your vision for a productive research environment. Postdoc candidates are encouraged to apply for fellowships with our assistance.

Start Date: February 1, 2024.

The first selection round will begin on September 18 and will continue until positions are filled. For more information, please visit Information for Students and Postdocs.

Last Date for Apply: Rolling admissions until positions are filled.
