Postdoctoral Associate: Quantum Systems: The Quantum Systems Team at the Virginia Tech National Security Institute (VTNSI) is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Associate position in quantum engineering starting in fall or summer 2024. The position, based in Arlington, Virginia, or Blacksburg, Virginia, is for one year with potential extensions up to three years. The successful candidate will work with the Quantum Systems Team, contributing to research in quantum technology and engineering, with a focus on quantum systems and devices.

Location: Arlington, Virginia, Blacksburg, Virginia, Hybrid

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in physics, engineering, or a related field (awarded within the last four years with a minimum of one year eligibility remaining).
  • U.S. person status due to research sensitivity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a diverse team.
  • Track record of conference presentations and publications in high-impact journals.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Effective communication skills, publication and presentation abilities.
  • Familiarity with modeling or simulating quantum systems, photonics, optics, or nonlinear dynamics.
  • Coding experience in Python, C, C++, Fortran, bash, etc.
  • Experience with AI and machine learning, managing and analyzing large datasets.
  • Practical knowledge of density functional theory methods and tools such as Quantum Espresso, VASP, Wien2k, Wannier90, or others.
  • Experience developing and running quantum algorithms (especially involving materials or molecular systems) on NISQ computers like IBM’s Quantum Platform.

Job Description:

  • Design, operate, and analyze experimental campaigns in quantum systems.
  • Develop particle accelerator diagnostics and controls using AI/ML methods.
  • Collaborate with Quantum Systems Team members.
  • Communicate results through publications and conferences.
  • Mentor junior team members.
  • Collaborate with university quantum initiatives.

Appointment Type: Restricted

Salary Information: $75,000 – $90,000 (commensurate with experience)
