  • Computational Biology
  • Human Ecosystems
  • Exposome-Genome Interface
  • Environmental Epidemiology
  • Genomics

Location

Heidelberg, Germany (with collaborative opportunities in Utrecht, Netherlands)

Eligibility/Qualification

  • A PhD or equivalent qualification in computer science, statistics, mathematics, physics, engineering, or a degree in biological science with demonstrated experience in computational and statistical development.
  • Experience in statistical learning or machine learning (e.g., Bayesian inference, deep-learning).
  • Proficiency in programming (Python) and experience with frameworks such as PyTorch, Keras, Pyro, or TensorFlow.

Job Description

You will work in an international team across EMBL’s Human Ecosystems Programme and Utrecht University, focusing on linking exposure data (physical-chemical, social, and dietary) with genetic resources from population-level bio-banks (e.g., UKBioBank, Lifelines). Responsibilities include:

  • Identifying Gene x Environment interactions in UKBioBank.
  • Using advanced computational techniques and new insights on exposures to inform genetic disease risk modeling.
  • Collaborating with large datasets containing high-dimensional information on both the genome and exposome.
