Postdoctoral Fellow in Biochemistry: The Department of Biochemistry at the University of Otago, located in Dunedin, New Zealand, is seeking a highly motivated and skilled postdoctoral fellow for a two-year full-time position. The fellow will work on a collaborative research project funded by the China–Maurice Wilkins Centre, in partnership with Dr. Matthias Fellner. The project aims to develop peptide-based tools for the treatment and diagnosis of infectious diseases. The person chosen for the job will work at the University of Otago and also as a visiting scientist at the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica (SIMM) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. They will be hosted by Prof. Shiyu Chen.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • PhD in Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Chemical Biology, or a similar discipline.
  • Experience in in vitro enzyme characterization, including cloning, purification, and structural characterization.
  • Knowledge of drug screening, discovery, and development, including peptides, antibody research, and phage display.

Job Description:

  • Establish a pipeline for the development of peptide-based tools targeting proteins related to bacterial infectious diseases.
  • Work with Dr. Fellner and Prof. Chen to study proteins at the Biochemistry Department of the University of Otago and SIMM.
  • Discover peptide inhibitors for target proteins at SIMM and characterize them at the University of Otago.
  • Focus on protein-inhibitor structure characterization using X-Ray crystallography at the Australian synchrotron.
  • Utilize cutting-edge phage-display methods for the generation of new peptide-based tools.
