Job Description & Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will join the medicinal chemistry research group led by Dr. Marvin Meyers. The primary focus of the role involves organic synthesis of new molecular compounds as potential drugs for the treatment of infectious diseases, along with designing new molecules, performing data analysis, characterization, and mentoring junior researchers.

Key duties include:

  • Design and execute organic syntheses for the preparation of intermediates and novel small molecules for biological evaluation.
  • Purify organic compounds to academic and industry journal standards using normal and reverse-phase chromatography techniques.
  • Characterize small molecules utilizing standard analytical tools, including NMR and LC-MS.
  • Maintain precise and thorough laboratory notebooks and digital data management records.
  • Draft technical reports, research manuscripts for publication, and patent applications.
  • Conduct relevant literature searches related to current and upcoming research projects.
  • Assist in training, guiding, and mentoring graduate and undergraduate student researchers in the laboratory.
  • Maintain laboratory supplies, instrumentation, and adhere strictly to university safety protocols.

Eligibility and Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, or a Ph.D. in a related field with at least two years of hands-on experience in a synthetic organic chemistry laboratory setting.
  • Strong background in multi-step organic synthesis, purification, and spectroscopic characterization.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with molecular modeling and/or structure-based drug design (SBDD).
  • Prior experience or background in medicinal chemistry and infectious disease targets.
