Eligibility / Qualification

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • PhD in a relevant field (preferably Mechanical or Mechatronic Engineering)
  • Degree must have been obtained within the last five years (or proof of completed examination)
  • Demonstrated expertise in industrial decarbonisation
  • Strong publication record in high-impact journals
  • Proven ability to conduct independent research
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

Job Description

The selected fellow will:

  • Conduct advanced research and publish in international journals and conferences
  • Develop and secure research funding for hybrid solar thermal systems
  • Design, model, optimise, and demonstrate renewable heating systems
  • Support implementation of projects across the Western Cape and South Africa
  • Monitor system performance, analyse data, and optimise efficiency
  • Evaluate energy savings, cost reduction, and CO₂/GHG impact
  • Co-supervise postgraduate students
  • Contribute to training, awareness programs, and academic dissemination
  • Assist in project coordination, industry collaboration, and administration

Fellowship Benefits

  • Annual funding: R 400,000 (2026/27)
  • Renewable up to 3 years (based on performance and funding availability)
