Postdoctoral Fellowship – Policy Research: The University of Waterloo invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Sustainability Policy Research focusing on urban transformations. The successful candidate will work closely with Prof. Sarah Burch on the TRANSFORM project, a transdisciplinary, community-engaged sustainability research initiative spanning Canada, Australia, the USA, Germany, Sweden, and the Netherlands. The fellowship is for a 2-year term with an anticipated salary of $57,000/annum, plus reasonable research/dissemination expenses.
Postdoctoral Fellowship – Sustainability Policy Research on Urban Transformations
Designation: Postdoctoral Fellow
Research Area: Sustainability transitions, governance of sustainability, community-led climate change initiatives, deep decarbonization, sustainability entrepreneurship.
Location: University of Waterloo, Sustainability Policy Research and Urban Transformation (SPROUT) Lab.
Eligibility/Qualification:
- Ph.D. degree in a relevant field, with strong skills in empirical social scientific research related to the environment, particularly interview-based research and qualitative data analysis.
- Extensive knowledge in governance, sustainability, transformations/transitions, entrepreneurship, climate change mitigation and adaptation, comparative politics, and participatory processes.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; fluency in English required.
- Proven ability to manage a team, mobilize data for peer-reviewed publications, and work semi-independently on a research project.
- Experience with interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary environmental research is advantageous.
- Legally eligible to work in Canada.

- Engage and support capacity building and experimentation with small businesses to strengthen sustainability-enabling ecosystems.
- Coordinate Master’s and PhD students, developing targeted engagement activities and research designs for sustainability practice.
- Lead knowledge translation and mobilization activities targeting public and private sector stakeholders.
- Design and produce peer-reviewed scholarly publications based on existing qualitative data.
- Expand the research agenda by exploring new avenues of sustainability transitions.
