Postdoctoral Fellowship Stipend at Umea University, Sweden

Postdoc Position (2 years) 2019 in Sweden, Umeå University

Postdoctoral Fellowship Stipend at Umea: Umea University Department of Molecular Biology in Sweden is offering a two-year postdoctoral fellowship stipend in the field of evolutionary biology and microbiology. The position is in the Lind Lab and focuses on understanding the predictability of evolutionary processes, specifically the evolution of multidrug resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The fellowship provides an opportunity to participate in a research group dedicated to forecasting evolutionary processes in bacterial model systems. The position is full-time and the starting date will be determined by mutual agreement.

Designation: Postdoctoral Fellow

Research Area: Evolutionary biology, microbiology, molecular biology, or related research areas.

Location: Umea University, Västerbotten, Umeå, Sweden

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • PhD or equivalent in evolutionary biology, microbiology, molecular biology, or related research areas.
  • Documented experience in fields such as experimental evolution, microbiology, bacterial genetics, mathematical modeling, bioinformatics, or molecular biological techniques.
  • Strong interest in understanding and predicting evolutionary processes on different biological levels.
  • Ability to carry out independent scientific research and write scientific manuscripts.
  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English.

Job Description:

Postdoctoral Fellowship Stipend in Forecasting Experimental Evolution of Antibiotic Resistance

The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for the following:

  • Participating in the research group focused on predicting and guiding evolutionary processes in bacterial model systems.
  • Conducting parallel experimental evolution with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and potentially other bacterial species.
  • Identifying and characterizing mutants with increased antibiotic resistance through genome sequencing, genetic engineering, and phenotypic and fitness assays.
  • Balancing laboratory work with theoretical/modeling/bioinformatics components based on candidate’s interests and qualifications.
  • Influencing the direction of the research and developing an independent line of research during the postdoc period.
