Location: ETH Zurich, Hönggerberg Campus, Zurich, Switzerland

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • PhD Degree: In biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology, or a related field.
  • Skills & Experience:
  • Strong background in horizontal gene transfer, natural transformation, membrane proteins, and DNA transporters.
  • Proficiency in protein expression and purification.
  • Experience with quantitative biophysical methods (e.g., fluorescence anisotropy, ITC, SPR).
  • Familiarity with cryo-EM workflow (including sample/grid preparation, data acquisition, processing, and model building).
  • Demonstrated ability to write scientific papers and engage actively in discussions.
  • Language Proficiency: Strong English skills required (both spoken and written).

Job Description:
You will investigate how DNA is translocated from the extracellular environment into the bacterial cytoplasm, integrating it into the genome. Responsibilities include:

  • Expressing and purifying proteins.
  • Conducting quantitative binding experiments for protein-protein and protein-DNA interactions.
  • Producing stable complexes between proteins and/or DNA.
  • Determining structures of proteins/complexes.
  • Designing mutants and conducting in vivo experiments.
  • Performing functional assays using microbiological approaches and fluorescence microscopy.

How to Apply:
Please submit your application online, including:

  • A cover/motivation letter demonstrating your suitability for the position and addressing your past research and future research plans at ETH.
  • A complete curriculum vitae including your academic record.
  • A copy of your PhD degree.
  • The name and contact information for two references.

Note: Applications sent via email or postal services will not be considered.
