Postdoctoral Openings in Computational Mechanics: The “Computational Mechanics & Scientific Learning” research group in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) invites applications for multiple postdoctoral positions. These positions focus on developing machine-learning-informed computational methods to tackle emerging engineering challenges. The expected start date is flexible.

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Ph.D. (completed or near completion) in Solid Mechanics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science, or a related field.
  • Strong programming skills (preferably in Python).
  • Good understanding of numerical methods such as the finite element method.
  • Experience with machine learning methods is a plus but not mandatory.

Job Description

The selected candidates will work on developing advanced computational methods that integrate machine learning for solving complex engineering problems. The research will focus on:

  • Methodology-driven topics:
    • AI + Computational Science
    • Differentiable Programming
    • Inverse Problems
    • Topology Optimization
  • Application-driven topics:
    • Metal Additive Manufacturing
    • Mechanical Metamaterials
    • Lithium-ion Batteries

Candidates will have the opportunity to collaborate on high-performance open-source software, including JAX-FEM, a differentiable finite element solver developed by the group.
