Postdoctoral Position – Graft Hybrid Formation: The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) Department of Plant Biology invites applications for a two-year Post-Doctoral position to investigate the mechanism behind plant graft formation and DNA exchange at the graft junction. The position is funded by a Starting Grant (StG) and Consolidator Grant (CoG) from the European Research Council (ERC) and will be conducted in the group of Charles Melnyk. The project aims to build upon recent discoveries in grafting and apply these findings to understand the formation of graft hybrids.
Designation: Post-Doctoral Researcher
Research Area: Plant Developmental Biology, Plant Genetics, Plant Molecular Biology
Location: Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Uppsala, Sweden
Eligibility/Qualification:
- PhD in Plant Developmental Biology, Plant Genetics, Plant Molecular Biology, or related fields
- Priority given to candidates with a doctoral degree not older than three years
- Experience in genetics, plants, transcriptomics, microscopy, and molecular biology
- Knowledge of techniques requiring micro-manipulation (e.g., grafting, tissue culture, meristem dissection)
- Creativity, motivation, and drive; excellent proficiency in English
- Ability to conduct independent research, ask pertinent scientific questions, and interact with other scientists
- Demonstrated previous scientific output, such as a first author or joint-first author published paper
Job Description: The project, funded by ERC grants, will span two years. In the first year, the focus will be on comparative transcriptomics to identify genes enhancing graft formation. The second year will concentrate on understanding the process of cell fusion and DNA exchange at the graft junction, investigating graft hybrid formation, its mechanisms, and potential applications in agriculture. International collaboration is a key aspect of the project.
How to Apply: Interested candidates should submit their applications through SLU’s application portal (Reference: SLU.ua.2023.2.5.1-4456) by January 8, 2024. The application must include:
- CV with a full publication list
- Description of research experiences, including a motivation statement
- Contact information for two to three references
