Postdoctoral Position in Environmental/Analytical Chemistry: A postdoctoral position is available immediately in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. This role is part of a multidisciplinary project focused on the impacts of petroleum and other small molecule contaminants on marine and freshwater ecosystems in the Canadian Arctic, funded through 2027. The successful candidate will work with toxicologists, biologists, environmental chemists, and analytical chemists, conducting research in both Edmonton and the Canadian Arctic.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • PhD in Analytical/Environmental Chemistry or a related discipline, obtained within the last three years (or expected before starting the position).
  • Experience in operating and maintaining either GC-MS or LC-MS for qualitative and quantitative analysis.
  • Experience in drafting manuscripts for publication.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team.

Additional Assets:

  • Experience in sample preparation for quantitative analysis (e.g., SPE, DLLME).
  • Experience with HPLC and GC separation systems.
  • Familiarity with comprehensive multidimensional separations systems.
  • Experience with multivariate statistical analysis tools.
  • Mentorship experience with junior researchers.

Job Description:
The successful candidate will:

  • Evaluate and operationalize sample preparation methods for Arctic samples.
  • Develop qualitative and quantitative methods for molecular characterization of petroleum and impacted water samples using LC-MS and GC×GC-MS.
  • Develop methods for analyzing exogenous analytes in biological samples (e.g., fish and marine invertebrates).
  • Conduct exposomics analysis using LC-MS and GC×GC-MS.
  • Perform raw data analysis and statistical interpretation, including multivariate statistical analysis.
  • Draft scientific reports and journal articles, and prepare presentations.
  • Mentor and collaborate with junior researchers and students.
  • Work within a multidisciplinary team and with stakeholders in the Canadian Arctic.
