Summary

The University of Antwerp is looking for a full-time postdoctoral researcher to join the ELCAT research group within the Faculty of Applied Engineering. The successful candidate will work on the European Research Council (ERC) funded project RECHARGE, led by Prof. Jonas Hereijgers, which aims to develop the next generation of redox flow batteries. This is an opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research within an excellent environment equipped with state-of-the-art lab facilities.

Campus Groenenborger (with most work conducted at Campus Drie Eiken), University of Antwerp, Belgium.

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Education: PhD in Engineering, (Electro)Chemical Engineering, Applied Engineering, or equivalent.  
  • Core Expertise: Relevant (international) experience in the field of redox flow batteries and expert knowledge of electrochemical engineering.
  • Practical Skills: Strong experience in experimental research on redox flow batteries and electrochemistry. Experience in scaling-up and stacking redox flow batteries is highly valued.  
  • Language: Fluent in spoken and written English (preferably C1 level).  
  • Personal Attributes: High degree of independence, attention to quality, integrity, creativity, and a cooperative mindset. Must possess an excellent study and research record.
  • Additional Assets: Knowledge of national and international fundraising, experience writing project proposals, and experience supervising PhD and/or master’s students. Recommendation letters are highly advised.  

Job Description

  • Conduct high-quality scientific research on redox flow batteries, specifically focusing on developing and testing 3D electrodes.  
  • Study the effects of hydrodynamics, shunt currents, and dynamic flow regimes on redox flow battery design.  
  • Develop a stack and scale up redox flow battery systems.  
  • Report research results and produce academic publications.
  • Assist in maintaining and overseeing the redox flow battery lab.  
  • Assist in the supervision of PhD students, other team members, and ongoing research projects.  
  • Develop new research projects and compete for external, national, and international research grants.  
  • Participate in academic services and represent the research group both internally and externally.
