Eligibility/Qualification

  • A PhD (or working towards completion) in genomics, genetics, bioinformatics, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in plant or animal genetics and genome evolution.
  • Evidence of leading research projects successfully.
  • Strong core scientific skills and a desire to learn and innovate.

Job Description

The successful candidate will contribute to the Earlham Institute’s core research programs on non-model crop species. Specific focus areas will include:

  1. Chromosomal Rearrangements and Structural Variations:
  • Develop long-read genome assemblies for bananas and Miscanthus.
  • Annotate genomes and build pangenomes to understand genomic processes.
  • Identify introgressions and CNVs linked to phenotypic information.
  1. Somatic and Epigenetic Variation:
  • Characterize DNA methylation and structural variants using Oxford Nanopore Technologies.
  • Develop novel approaches for removing deleterious variants and incorporating beneficial genetic diversity in clonal lines to improve resilience and productivity.

The role involves fully computational work, including analyzing crop populations using pan-genome references. Training will be provided in various bioinformatic methods.
